Stay Safe on the Ice: Winter Safety Tips for Pigeon Lake

Updated: a few seconds ago

As winter settles in, Pigeon Lake becomes a favorite spot for skating, ice fishing, and other seasonal activities. While these traditions are cherished, ice can be unpredictable and dangerous if not approached with caution. Before you head out, take time to understand the risks and follow these essential safety guidelines.

1. Check Ice Thickness

Ice strength varies with temperature, water movement, and snow cover. Always measure thickness in multiple spots using an ice auger or drill. General safety recommendations:

  • 4 inches for walking or skating

  • 5–7 inches for snowmobiles or ATVs

  • 8–12 inches for small vehicles

Never assume uniform thickness—conditions on Pigeon Lake can change quickly.

2. Avoid Weak Spots

Certain areas are more prone to thin or unstable ice:

  • Near inlets, outlets, bridges, docks, or any location with moving water

  • Places with cracks, slush, or dark patches—these signal weak ice

On Pigeon Lake, pay special attention to areas near feeder streams and boat launches, where ice tends to be thinner.

3. Go Prepared

Even experienced outdoor enthusiasts should take precautions:

  • Wear a life jacket or flotation suit

  • Carry ice picks and a rope for self-rescue

  • Use the buddy system—never venture out alone

Preparation can make the difference between a close call and a tragedy.

4. When in Doubt, Stay Off

If you’re uncertain about ice conditions, don’t take chances. Safety should always come first.
